Seminar on Sakhalin

Great Baikal Trail has once more been sharing experience on Sakhalin. This time, from 13 to 17 April, we helped carry out a seminar on the development of ecological education in botanic gardens, organised by the Sakhalin branch of the Far-East Botanic Garden.

We shared our experience of working with volunteers, organizing volunteer camps, leadership, and footpath-building technology. In collaboration with colleagues from the Sakhalin social organization ‘Boomerang’, we touched on questions of interpretation and interpretative planning, worked on the creation of information stands, and planned a footpath on the territory of the botanic garden in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, which will be built by volunteers this summer.

Participants in the seminar included employees of botanic gardens and education centres from Tver, Tomsk, Yakutsk, Blagoveshchensk, Amursk, Vladivostok, and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. It was very interesting to work with colleagues from science and education, inspired by ideas for the development and improvement of their botanic gardens. Many thanks to the organizers for the positive impressions received during the excursions to the city’s museums and to the coast.

GBT was represented by acting director Eleonora Yeremchenko, and by path building specialist and expedition leader Natalia Ivanova.
