Grant Work Continues
01/22/2019
The Big Baikal Trail Association continues to work on the project "We Conserve Nature, Working for People" supported by the Presidential Grants Fund.
Both winter projects have been prepared - descriptions have been posted on the site in Russian and English, the maximum number of volunteers has been recruited, and now their final coordination is underway.
The remaining 18 BBT projects in 2019 (summer and autumn) are also available on the site in two languages, a set of volunteers is being conducted.
The program of transferring experience to the regions is actively being prepared - this year BBT specialists will travel to six regions: to Kostroma, the Republic of Bashkortostan, the Arkhangelsk and Novgorod Regions, the Trans-Baikal Territory, and the Republic of Crimea. A program has been drawn up and correspondence is being held with the host parties.
The development of a distance learning program for interpreters and interpreters and assistants to BBT team leaders has begun, and a program has been drawn up.
The preparation of BBT team courses has begun - full-time classes will be held in Irkutsk from March to May and will end with the "final exam" - a practical BBT workshop in the Baikal Reserve.
Spring is coming - a season of trips and intelligence. We began preparations for reconnaissance, a travel schedule was set.
An inventory of all BBT equipment has begun.
Our designer began to develop layouts of arrows, pointers and stands that will be installed on this year's projects.
We started work on creating video clips - this year 4 videos about our activities will be released. It's nice that thanks to the cooperation with the Lime-Accelerator project, a video clip of social advertising about volunteering on BBT has already been created: https://youtu.be/T0rh1eV-Nio
Work continues - planning BBT work for 10 years until 2030. A dialogue with protected areas has been launched in order to identify and agree on priority areas for the development of paths in Lake Baikal.
Several strategic planning sessions have been held. We worked out the formulation of our mission, our values, principles of work, deduced our goals and our vision, formed the definition of "BBT Leader is this", and also identified the tree of problems that BBT will work with in the near future.
International Education Exhibition
01/28/2019
The BBT Association took part in an international education exhibition held on January 27, 2019 at the Ibis Hotel in Irkutsk.
The event was organized by the Wilhelm von Humboldt Center for German Language.
BBT specialists and volunteers told visitors about our activities and how knowledge of foreign languages opens new doors for BBT projects.
"Foreign languages on Lake Baikal" - this was one of the topics of the exhibition, where BBT also gave the floor.
Here's what we talked about: "There are many tourists on Lake Baikal, including many who come to us for BBT projects. Since 2003, BBT has been the only opportunity for foreigners to visit Lake Baikal in an interesting way.
In order to accept foreigners for projects, the BBT Association conducts courses of translators, after which the guys go to the project - for a two-week immersion in intercultural communication, in the language. The opportunities for foreign internships are broader for active BBT volunteers and translators - the practice of a foreign language. "
In late spring, BBT will launch free BBT translator courses, stay tuned for announcements.

The winter project is over
02/22/2019
From February 5-14, in the village of Tankhoi, on the shore of Lake Baikal, the first BBT volunteer project took place this year.
Participants of the winter project "Snow of the Baikal Reserve" can be called the most brave and desperate of our volunteers - not afraid of forty-degree Siberian frosts (which, to be honest, hard came even for us Siberians), guys from Moscow, Samara, Shchelkovo, Melenok, Lytkarino, Sibaya , Melbourne (Australia) and Vienna (Austria) came to harsh Siberia to get acquainted with winter Baikal and help the Baikal Reserve.
For 10 days in the reserve, the volunteers managed to redo a bunch of things:
• cleaned the snow on wooden paths,
• did spring cleaning at visit centers,
• developed and conducted a lesson for students of a local school on the topic of eco-professions,
• erected several benches in the carpentry workshop (and then solemnly installed a couple of them on the new path),
• wrapped juniper bushes to protect fragile plants from the bright Baikal sun,
• tested the quest, invented for young guests of the reserve,
• shared with the reserve their ideas for children's activities and souvenirs.
The Baikal Reserve always warmly welcomes BBT volunteers. This was no exception. The guys went on an interesting tour of the Museum of Nature with an honorary employee of the reserve Nikolai Nikolaevich. We watched stunning photographs and listened to breathtaking stories from the wonderful wildlife photographer Alexei Bezrukov. Fun went for a walk in the snowy taiga on kamusnyh hunting skis. They took a good steam bath in the bathhouse, and after that they were especially brave even bathed in snowdrifts.
And in honor of Sagaalgan - the Buryat New Year - they learned to cook poses - the Buryat national dish. We tried the Sacher cake - the very chocolate sweet that many tourists travel to the Austrian capital. We listened to a concert on the harmonica, poems and tales of my own composition. We played in the brain ring, learning a lot of interesting facts about Samara Luka and the Zhiguli Mountains. We realized that the history of a small town near Moscow can be no less interesting than the history of the capital city (the main thing is the ability to present!). We saw that the work of prospecting geologists is not only dangerous and difficult, but also fun and romantic. They crunched Togliatti dryers (the most delicious dryers in Russia) and enjoyed TimTam - the favorite cookie of the Australian kids
In general, there were so many affairs, events and adventures on the project that you won't remember everything!
I would like to express my deep gratitude to the Baikal Reserve and its staff for their hospitality, friendliness and interesting tasks.
And, of course, many, many thanks to the volunteer guys for their help, enthusiasm, new ideas and for the fact that every minute of our project was full of meaning!
The project was carried out using a grant from the President of the Russian Federation for the development of civil society provided by the Presidential Grants Fund.
BBT begins to transfer experience

Baikal Business Forum 2019
05/20/2019
Specialists of the BBT Association took part in the Baikal Business Forum, which was held on May 16-17 at the Scientific Library named after V.G. Rasputin.
The Baikal Business Forum today is the only economic forum in the region, and is a platform for dialogue between business and government, for the exchange of experience and the acquisition of new knowledge.
The main interest for us was the section "Development of Baikal Recreational Territories and Small Business", which hosted a strategic session on presenting existing and developing projects on Baikal and designing them to form a common base of initiatives on the portal https://2030.baikal.ru/
The main task is to develop scenarios for the development of the Baikal territories, analyze and update projects, and collect proposals. By the spring of 2020, the organizers of the portal intend, having formed a single image of the future, to determine a comprehensive scheme for its implementation with fixing those responsible for specific functional blocks of the strategy.
An open community of the most active representatives of the tourism market will work on the task. The initiators of the movement will involve more than 300 participants in the process: entrepreneurs, corporations, representatives of the Government and municipalities, environmental and public organizations, law enforcement agencies.
As a result, a clear, synchronized schedule of the activities of entrepreneurs and government agencies will appear, aimed at developing tourism in Lake Baikal.
Field lesson in Bolshoi Goloustnoye
05/21/2019
Last Sunday, May 19, we spent with benefit - we visited the students of the Bolshegoloustnensky school and conducted a lesson with the guys on the topic of professions that help to preserve nature.
On Sunday's BBT eco-lesson, more than 20 children of all ages came. Schoolchildren tried themselves in the role of scientific workers, having carried out an inventory of animals and observing how the seal population is changing from year to year. We learned what the work of a tourism manager is like, having developed an eco-route along Baikal for a group of foreign tourists. We came up with our own protected areas, discussed what a fictional reserve would be protected (as a result, underwater plants and rare fish, eagles and all animals), discussed what kind of staff we needed for the successful operation of the protected area.
The lesson at Bolshoi Goloustnoy was the final BBT retreat this season. Next fall, students of our sponsored schools expect exciting new lessons on equally interesting and useful topics!
We remind you that all the trips of our specialists within the field classes became possible with the assistance of our partners En + Group

Primordial Russia
05/30/2019
On May 26, children and adults gathered as part of the Primordial Russia exhibition to learn a little more about the little creatures that filter Baikal's water: amphipod, planarium and epishura. The participants were introduced to the inhabitants of Lake Baikal by the coordinators of educational projects of the Big Baikal Trail Association Irina Kovalenkova and Anna Zelikhman.
The names of these animals turned out to be so unusual that they even had to figure out who is who !? But then everyone was passionate about the game. Participants reincarnated as migratory birds, did their best to get to the place of the next camp. But bad weather, hunters, forest fires and bird watchers, had different effects on the flight of birds. Someone quickly reached the goal, others took 3-4 attempts for a successful flight! Both children and adults really enjoyed playing, the participants discovered a lot of new things.
We thank the organizers of "Primordial Russia" for the invitation and organization of the work of our station.
The next lesson for children "With a backpack along the trail" of the BBT educational department will be held in one of the parks of the city of Irkutsk in June - August. In the program: a magnifier, binoculars and a compass, participants will learn to carefully examine everything around while walking through the forest - birds, trees, insects, how it works.

15 children from 7 to 14 years old from the Sverdlovsk Children's Help Center learned how to determine the cardinal points using a compass, examined the smallest details and patterns of tree bark through a magnifying glass to distinguish a healthy tree from a patient. But most of all the guys liked working with binoculars!
The guys expanded their knowledge of the world, learned how to navigate on the map and much more.
We thank the Lake Baikal Foundation for the materials and bandanas for the children, and the BBT Association for the badges with the program's symbols.

The lesson was held on the territory of Correctional School No. 1, where trees and paths are abundant. Pupils of the school showed great interest and enthusiasm.
During the lesson, several more children joined us, so even there weren't enough backpacks for everyone!
Young researchers from 8 to 14 years old were happy to study their contents: they used a magnifying glass to examine the blade of grass, ornament the bark of trees and tiny insects on the palm; Through binoculars we observed birds nesting in the highest branches; studied the difference in the bark of different tree species through blindfold kinesthetics.
At the end of the lesson, the young researchers received pleasant memorable prizes - bandanas and badges, as a certificate of participation in the project "With a backpack along the trail".
We thank the Lake Baikal Foundation for bright bandanas and sponsorship, for making this project possible, and Correctional School No. 1 for the territory provided and for such interested participants! And see you soon.
Exploration of springs in Baikal
07/01/2019
On June 20-21, BBT specialists carried out exploration of springs on Lake Baikal.
On the territory of Olkhon, we looked at two sources near Khuzhir - Klyuchik Pervy and Klyuchik II in the Tumer Tologoi Paddy, as well as a spring in Padi Idiba. In Ekhirit-Bulagat district, we saw a couple of springs in the village of Zurtsagan.
Estimated how the springs wintered, what is the current water content
- Klyuchik First and Second - low water content.
- The springs of Idib - the cup has suffered from the activity of ungulates, needs to be restored and strengthened. There is a request from local residents for the installation of a gutter and a separate bowl for livestock.
- Springs in Zurtsagan - at the moment, local residents and activists have built fences around the "heads *", water is flowing. The plans to offer the arrangement in the form of a wooden box with the ability to conveniently take water.
The BBT autumn spring home improvement projects will take place in September, lasting 3 and 8 days.

* The head of the spring is the place where water flows from the earth.
Exploration on the Shumilikha River
07/01/2019
On July 13-20, reconnaissance took place in the Barguzinsky Reserve to plan the work of the project "The Country of the Barguzin Sable."
The project team and the reserve staff outlined the upcoming work plan, made a detailed marking of the trail so that it harmoniously fit into the landscape, made adjustments to the existing section of the trail. There will be a lot of work, but this route is very important for the reserve, because it leads to one of the seven wonders of Buryatia - the Waterfall on the Shumilikha River!
We remind you that the trail was damaged by a fire in 2015, and now its full restoration is ahead. What the BBT volunteer team will do on the project "The Country of the Barguzin Sable"!

We wish the guys a successful start, a productive process and a successful conclusion
"With a Rucksack Along the Trail"
07/04/2019
On July 3, the next lesson "With a Rucksack along the Path" was successfully completed. This time the path lay in the picturesque pine forest of the village of Zherdovka, where we were met by children of all ages of the Center for Assisting Children Without Parental Care
So many interested people gathered this time that I had to conduct a lesson in two stages! Even the smallest participants were happy to stare through the magnifier with leaflets and insects, looked at the mighty forest with binoculars and drew pencil drawings in a workbook. For their enthusiasm, everyone received memorable prizes: workbooks "With a backpack along the trail", bright bandanas and badges.
We thank the Lake Baikal Foundation for continued support in financing the project!
"With a backpack on the trail" in Azure
07/10/2019
On July 8 and 9, two more classes of the project "With a Backpack along the Path" were held. We were greeted by the children's recreation camp "Lazurny", where more than 200 children spend their summers actively and with interest!
And now 43 young researchers put on their backpacks and with interest went along the forest paths in the camp: to examine ripe strawberries through a magnifying glass; observe through the binoculars for waterfowl in the bay; recognize new species of birds from the atlas-qualifier and, of course, learn to build a route, guided by the compass.
We thank the Lake Baikal Foundation for financial assistance for each lesson
Test Path
07/11/2019
Go to the Path of Trials! The second BBT project this summer started from the city of Ulan-Ude
Volunteers will spend 2 weeks of the "Test Path" project on the Svyatoy Nos peninsula, where they will encounter serious physical exertion (after all, only a hike from the camp to the workplace in one direction is 5 km, and some of them are uphill !!). The guys will continue to build a convenient serpentine to climb the peninsula plateau and disguise the old dangerous trail.
In such circumstances, each at the end will be considered a hero.
We wish the team unflagging fortitude and, of course, success!
In the taiga region of Pribaikalye - 2
07/11/2019
The fourth project began this morning! "Into the taiga region of Baikal Region - 2" moved to the Emelyanikh valley to change the team of the first project, which took place here from July 1 to 10.
The goals and objectives of the guys will be the same: repair the existing popular Listvyanka - Bolshie Koty path, which will include clearing the corridor, excavating the ground and building the necessary structures.
We wish you a good journey and a successful transfer of the powers of the groups to each other.
"With a backpack along the trail" in the "Galaxy"
07/15/2019
On July 11, classes "With a backpack along the trail" were held at the Galaxy camp. Now there are resting, playing and developing children from the settlements of the Tulun region affected by the flood. Such curious and active guys did not want to let us go at all. We took several walks along the forest paths and got deeper acquainted with the outside world:
The cardinal points were determined;
Insects and tree bark were examined through a magnifying glass;
Learned the types of clouds and future weather;
We found our tree and measured its age.
Thanks to the organizers, educators and counselors for their responsiveness, we thank the Lake Baikal Foundation for their help in conducting the classes.
"To the taiga region of Baikal-3"
07/15/2019
On July 12-14, the project "Into the taiga region of Baikal-3" took place.
The guys went along the route of Listvyanka - Bolshie Koty village, building a bridge-crossing.
The guys also met with the project "Into the taiga region of Pribaikalye -2", from which several participants joined them for 1 day. With their help, the bridge was built faster!
The new bridge has become much wider and more convenient than the previous one!
"At Debri Hamar-Daban - 1"
07/15/2019
So the next project came forward today from the courtyard of the BBT Hostel! This time, the volunteers and their commanders go to the Siberian "jungle" - to the wilds of the marvelous Khamar-Daban mountain range ...
The project "In Debri Hamar-Daban - 1" will be held on the territory of the Baikal Reserve, in forests two kilometers from the village of #Tankhoy, on the banks of the mountain river Osinovka. It will last 14 days. During the project, the guys will need to build a new trail, as well as build fortification walls on a wet slope.
It's not for nothing that Hamar-Daban was called the Siberian "jungle", because the humidity in this region is much higher than anywhere else in the Baikal Region. Therefore, the trail must be done at the highest level! We believe in the guys and support them.
Bon Voyage!
BBT in Khakassia
07/16/2019
A team of specialists and a BBT volunteer went to Khakassia with the transfer of experience!
We thank the State Treasury Office of the Republic of Khakassia "Directorate for Specially Protected Natural Territories of the Republic of Khakassia".
The BBT team will be here from July 16 to July 20.
In the program: a short adapted course "Initial training of specialists in the construction and reconstruction of paths and working with volunteers."
Together we will examine the options for building trails on the territory of the Uytag nature monument, which is located in the Askiz district of the Republic of Khakassia.
The territory of the Uytag nature monument is a picturesque mountain range located in the steppe zone on the border of the Uybat and Sagai steppes. A unique feature of the territory are the places of accumulation of fossilized samples of fossil plants (including lepidodendrons, which grew in this area about 400 million years ago), located directly on the surface of the ridge.
The BBT project "To the taiga region of Baikal-1" has completed!
07/17/2019

Of these, wooden supporting platforms: 4 units with a total length of 38 m
Clearing the corridor 3 km (11 serpentine knees)
Restored 1 information stand installed on the top of the serpentine
"Closed" 7 elemental paths
Signs and arrows set on the trail.
Geography of participants: Nizhnekamsk, Norilsk, Moscow, Dolgoprudny, Irkutsk, Shelekhov, Angarsk, St. Petersburg, as well as the United Kingdom and the USA.
Many thanks to our volunteers - the team gathered positive, friendly and working!

The project "Country of the Barguzin sable" has started
07/19/2019
Today our project "Country of the Barguzin sable" has started!
The project will be held in the oldest reserve in Russia - Barguzinsky - and will last 14 days
Volunteers will be engaged in the restoration of the trail (which suffered from a strong fire in 2015), which leads to one of the Seven Wonders of Buryatia - Shumilikha Waterfall.
The work will be hard, but we have no doubt that the guys will perfectly cope with the task, because most of the participants in this project are no longer new to BBT, but volunteers with experience
Good luck friends! In two weeks we are looking forward to being tired, soiled in soot, but satisfied from the great work done!
This volunteer camp is part of the project "We Preserve Nature, Working for People," which is being implemented using a grant from the President of the Russian Federation for the development of civil society provided by the Presidential Grants Fund
