Project Site: in the Osinovka River Valley, part of the Baikal National Nature Reserve, which is headquartered in the Buryatia village of Tankhoi
"The wilds of the taiga forest, at the foot of the Khamar-Daban mountains, are waiting for you to do heroic deeds!"

Our projects are set in some of the most beautiful locations around Lake Baikal. For this project you will be staying in a tent camp, and will perform diverse work to help us build up a hiking trail. You will also learn more about the natural world around Baikal, and how volunteerism and ecotourism are important in the development of our national parks.

ATTENTION: the project is not taking place on Lake Baikal. Your camp will be located at the foot of the Khamar-Daban ridge on the banks of the Osinovka mountain river.

Project Schedule
Project Schedule
Days 1-2: Project launch dates
We recommend that you arrive in our city of Irkutsk at least one day before the start of this project.

On the first day we will meet at 9.00AM at our GBT city office, and will introduce everyone in our project team before leaving Irkutsk.

At 10AM we will depart by auto transport for the village of Tankhoi, which is a 4-5 hour drive. We will eat a snack along the way before we arrive at our camp in the Baikalski Nature Reserve. That afternoon and into the next morning we will be setting up our camp site.
At the site our crew captains will lead you to:
• set up camp (first by setting up all the tents, then by gathering
up firewood and helping prepare for the first camp supper!)
• participate in our initial training on trail safety, and on the rules
and protocols that will guide us for the duration of the project

Your crew leader will also make a schedule of daily chores for all
the participants, assigning each one of you a share of the cooking
shifts and other tasks that will help us maintain an orderly camp.
Days 3-9
These are the days when we will be working on the trail. We will clear out space to widen an existing trail, and, where necessary, we will construct special structures along the way (such as small bridges, stairway inclines, or retaining walls for the trail).

On average our teams will work around 6 hours a day, with a break for lunch.

There will be one full day off work for everyone, where all team members will stay near the camp site to enjoy a day of rest and recreation.
Day 10: Project completion date
On this last morning the project team will be asked to break camp,
and collect and pack all their personal belongings as well as all the
tools, equipment, and supplies to transfer back on the trail to Tankhoi. From there we will take a bus back to Irkutsk, and then conduct a final debriefing meeting at our GBT city office.

Your project team leaders:
We will have one crew leader, who is the head of the entire project and organizes daily work schedules and oversees all work to ensure that safety protocols are met.

There will also be an interpreter and an assistant crew leader who will help with translation, help managing the project and leading the evening cultural and entertainment programs for our volunteer participants.
